Ideas?

I started to read A Day No Pigs Would Die to McKayla last night and realized a few paragraphs in that while that is one of my favorite books from my childhood, it was my older childhood than McKayla is currently.

Does anyone have any suggestions about a good chapter book to read to an almost nine year old?  Thanks.
